USC 프리마스터 수강과목 안내

 

 

USC international Academy에서 제공되는 Pre-Master's Program은 USC 약 100여개 대학원 프로그램에 조건부 입학이 가능한 프로그램입니다.

 

지원하고자 하는 대학원 전공에 프리마스터로 지원 시 최소로 요구하는 영어조건은 있습니다. 대학원에 바로 지원하는 것보다는 낮은 영어성적을 요구하며, GRE는 몇개 전공을 제외하고는 프리마스터 지원 당시에는 요구하지 않습니다. 대학원 수업 시작전까지 GRE 제출 하는 경우가 대부분입니다. 그래서 USC International Academy 프리마스터 프로그램에서는 아카데믹 영어 스킬을 비롯해 GRE/GMAT 등과 같은 시험준비 과목도 진행을 하고 있습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

프리마스터 프로그램 수업은 대학원에 지원한 전공에 따라 2가지 Academic Tracks로 나뉘어 집니다.

 -  Business, Social Science, and Arts

 -  Science, Technology, and Health

 

 

 

CORE COURSES

Academic Writing for Graduate School I

Students gain ability and confidence in all aspects of the academic writing process, including: awareness of audience, critical thinking, brainstorming, outlining, thesis, drafting, organization and development, use of sources and citations, and revision. Various genres and viewpoints are addressed, as students improve clarity and accuracy by responding to graduate-level questions.

 

Academic Writing for Graduate School II

Students develop the tools for writing in-depth research papers, synthesizing information from a variety of sources and perspectives to state logical conclusions. Emphasis is on analysis, critique, and assessment. Students must correctly cite sources and demonstrate understanding of the importance of avoiding plagiarism. Topics are aligned to students’ fields of study whenever possible.

 

Academic Listening and Speaking

Students learn strategies and skills for listening and note-taking in academic lectures. Communication skills are strengthened by engaging in classroom debates, initiating and participating in discussions, and asking and answering questions using academic vocabulary and U.S. classroom style. Students receive guidance in delivering presentations with effective visual aids.

 

Academic Reading and Vocabulary Building I

Students improve general and academic reading skills through development of fluency and vocabulary. Students learn to use cues and clues from sentence structures, word forms, and affixation to increase critical-reading ability and comprehension. Assignments strengthen skills in analyzing and synthesizing material, recognizing rhetorical strategies, and inferring stance and tone.

 

Academic Reading and Vocabulary Building II

Reading speed and capacity are increased by extensive reading and practice in determining an author’s purpose, view, and tone, and by employing inference and prediction while skimming to identify main and secondary ideas. Students develop an active academic vocabulary, become familiar with genres such as literature reviews, research studies, and policy papers, and gain skills for reading long texts. Exposure to idiomatic and colloquial references increases proficiency and confidence.

 

 

 

ACADEMIC SKILLS

Graduate Communication Skills

Graduate students must understand lectures and classroom exchanges with ease and express themselves spontaneously. This course focuses on: explaining, summarizing information, expressing critical thought, negotiating, stating opinions, and speaking persuasively. Precise speaking is practiced in presentations and interaction. Assignments are linked to students’ fields of study.

 

Research Methods for Graduate Study

Research skills are developed with an emphasis on planning, organization, and clarity. Using a theoretical framework, students learn to search reference materials, use library and online database resources, evaluate and utilize sources, and correctly use appropriate styles of documentation. Note-taking practices that serve to prevent accidental plagiarism are taught and practiced.

 

Pursuing Your Graduate School Education

Students will explore their degree program of study, write Statements of Purpose, and gain familiarity with college catalogs and course syllabi. The course provides time for students to meet with professors and professionals from their field.
